No public money for the Beetaloo gas mine

No public money for the Beetaloo gas mine

Gas is just as dirty as coal and it needs to stay in the ground.

The COP26 Climate Summit in Glasgow made it abundantly clear: we won't stay below 1.5 degrees of heating if we open any new coal, oil or gas projects.

But instead of planning for a safe climate future and rapidly transitioning to renewable energy, the Liberals want to frack 34 billion tonnes of methane gas in the Beetaloo Basin.

This is catastrophic. If we unlock new gas fields across the NT, it could release the equivalent of 68 years of Australia's pollution.

It would destroy the land and water and goes against the wishes of Traditional Owners and the local communities, who are being ignored by corporations and the NT & Federal governments.

The gas plan in Beetaloo Basin is a rort. $21 million has already been allocated to Empire Energy, whose chair is a Liberal Party donor. Public money should be spent on schools, hospitals and education not handed out to Liberal party donors with no oversight.

The good news? The Senate can block $50m of public money being handed to corporations to frack the Beetaloo.

We've got the numbers to make this happen, but we need Labor to join us.

Climate action cannot wait until the next election. If we don't block this project now, wells could be in the ground fracking toxic methane gas before the end of the year.

Please, call a Labor MP or Senator today and demand they vote to stop public money going to climate-wrecking gas projects in the Beetaloo Basin.

Call Labor

With a Disallowance Motion predicted for Wednesday 24 November in the Senate, this could be our last chance to stop the Liberals handing out public money to frack the Beetaloo Basin.

Can you call your local Labor MP or Senator and ask them to join the fight to stop taxpayer dollars from being used to fund climate-wrecking gas projects.

I know that this week, the Senate is expected to vote on whether or not public money should be granted for new gas fracking projects in the Beetaloo Basin.

If this funding goes ahead these new gas mines will:

  • Threaten our future - releasing 34 billion tonnes of methane gas
  • Increase our national emissions by 20% when we should be doing the opposite
  • Pollute the ground and water of local communities
  • Go against the wishes of Traditional Owners who've been campaigning to have their voices heard and these projects shut down

Public money should be going to school and hospitals, not gas corporations.

Remember to thank them for their time!
