Australia must commit to the fast track of vaccines worldwide

At long last, the Liberals have indicated that they will support the waiver of intellectual property provisions on Covid-19 vaccines, medical tools and equipment.

This will fast-track vaccine production across the world, removing countless barriers and allowing poorer countries to protect themselves. Despite this indication of support, we are yet to see an unambiguous and vocal commitment to the waiver.

The proposal came before the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) TRIPS Council almost a year ago. By holding out this long, Australia has hindered global efforts while millions were infected with the virus across the Global South.

The TRIPS Council next meets on 14 September and so we need a clear and unambiguous commitment from the government now.

Trade Minister Dan Tehan must give Australia’s full-throated support to the waiver as proposed by India and South Africa, and commit to convincing other hold-out members to give their long-overdue support.
